Dancin' In The Streets
Last week we prognosticated the presidential campaign's growing racial divide by saying: " ..this racial thing is gonna turn stupider and stupider real fast," (08-06-01). Well, it happened all too swiftly.
Representative Steve King (R-IA) said on 3/7/08, "I will tell you that, if he [Obama] is elected president, then the radical Islamists, the al-Qaeda, the radical Islamists and their supporters, will be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11 because they will declare victory in this War on Terror." (Video Here)
Mr. King further stated, "Additionally, his middle name does matter. It matters because they [the radical Islamists] read a meaning into that in the rest of the world. That has a special meaning to them. They will be dancing in the streets because of his middle name."
Barack H. Obama's retort, "I think that Mr. King has it backwards. The fact that the continuation of a presence in Iraq as Senator McCain has suggested is exactly what, I think, will fan the flames of anti-American sentiment and make it more difficult for us to create a long-term and sustainable peace in the world.
"But I have to say that Mr. King and individuals like him thrive on offensive or controversial statements as a way to get in the papers, so I dont take it too seriously. I would hope Senator McCain would want to distance himself from that kind of inflammatory and offensive remarks."
CAIR, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, chimed in with, "The fact that one little-known Republican congressman holds bigoted views is less important than the fact that leaders of his party remain silent as one of their own exploits the growing Islamophobia in our society to score cheap political points. We call on GOP leaders, including President Bush, to repudiate Congressman King's divisive and counterproductive remarks."
Surprise, surprise. CSW sees it Mr. King's way. It's neither racial nor "Islamophobia." It's an opinion and we're sticking to it.
Look, the number of Muslims in congress has just doubled (see 08-07-01). A man could quite conceivably become the U.S. president who has a name that sounds more suited for the president of Kenya than the president of the United States. A man could quite conceivably become the U.S. president who has a Muslim heritage and a man could quite conceivably become the U.S. president with a middle name of "Hussein." These facts tend to make some American's mighty nervous, facts that the mainstream media refuse to write/talk about because they fear that they may be labeled as bigots and racists. But, if you ask mainstream America for their inner thoughts, the aforementioned facts always surface.
Thank you ladies and gentlemen for your attention and have a good evening.
The bar is open.
How do you see it?
