PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE I
2004 - CSW COMMENTS
Dateline Miami 9/30/04 CSW
We had the intro for this article written and approved before the debate started. We had to start from scratch after watching it.
Lets line up the discussion points:
- The questions were presented in such a way as to keep the President on the defensive the entire evening.
- Few questions were asked directly of Kerry to explain in detail what he would do differently than the President.
- Once again Kerry wasnt saying what he WOULD do but what he WOULDNT do. Whatever Bush does, Kerry wouldnt. Whatever Bush does, its wrong. Thats telling America your plan, isnt it?
- The redirection technique of Kerrys was masterful. Hes had years to hone the skill. This is where a question is asked and the answer is redirected to a different question. The democrats use the technique quite well and quite often.
- The answers Kerry gave were more of the same non-committal rhetoric we have come to know and despise.
- The President appeared as though he was surprised by the campaign rhetoric spewed by Kerry during the debate. We could have watched Kerrys ads and learned just as much about him and his ideas as we did last night. Mr. Bush seemed primed for more of a policy debate than an ad war. It didnt happen.
The bottom line is that Kerry presented himself better than he has in the past. Not on policy issues, but physically. He made a good appearance; he said nothing more than a couple of lame sound bites. The President stuck to the issues and his convictions.
Ask yourself these questions:
- What will Kerry do to help expedite the Iraqi war differently than Mr. Bush?
- Would Kerry have removed Hussein?
- How many times would Kerry ask the U.N. for approval to take action before he would take that action?
- Would Kerry take preemptive action against Iran or Korea?
- If Kerry misspoke about the $87B for our troops, did he vote for or against the funding?
- Coalitions are very important to Kerry. He cant make a decision without global approval or passing a global test, his words not ours. That being the case, why does he insist on bi-lateral talks with N. Korea rather than the multi-lateral talks President Bush has going now?
- What is Kerrys detailed plan on the war on Iraq?
- Why is Kerry hedging his presidency by saying if he cant get things done as president it will be because George Bush screwed things up so badly he cant fix them? What a cop-out. We dont need that kind of a man as president! We could say, but we won't, that if Clinton had blown Bin Ladens a$$ away when he had the chance, we wouldnt be in this mess!
If you analyze the debate on content you know where President Bush stands. You cant come close to saying that about Kerry. The undecided are probably still undecided, Kerryites are still for Kerry and the Bush supporters are still for Bush. There was nothing new!! In betting terms its called a push.
